Und nach dem Lauf: CULTURAL NIGHT

aka „menningarnott“. Nach der „Gay Pride“ die groesste Veranstaltung des Jahres in Island, bzw Reykjavik.

Reykjavik Culture Night will be held for the 13th time 23rd August.

The event has long since become an essential part of cultural life in Iceland with thousands of people strolling the streets of the city on this exciting and eventful night. Countless cultural institutes such as galleries, ateliers, shops, cafés, churches, restaurants and bars in Reykjavik city centre stay open until late and the celebrations culminate in a large fireworks show. The immensely popular Reykjavik Marathon takes place on the same day.

This year’s theme for Reykjavik Culture Night is „City Squares“. Squares and hidden corners of the city come alive with various happenings such as theatre, games, music and art.

The icing on the cake will be a large concert at Miklatun Park where some of Iceland’s best bands perform between 7pm and 10.30pm.

Ganz Reykjavik feiert und es gibt ueberall Kunst, Musik und Performances, dazu haben Cafes, Geschaefte etc die Nacht durch auf und es gibt ein grosses Outdoor-Konzert!

Leider bin ich ja „alleine“ in Reykjavik unterwegs, aber Chnces stehen gut, das ein paar Leutchen aus HUsavik auch aufkreuzen und am Sonntagabend hole ich ja „meine Geaste“, Andreas, Sandra und Doro in Keflavik ab …

Running the 10km at the Glitnir Reykjavik Marathon

So! 10km werde ich ja wohl schaffen, auch wenn meine Zeit wohl beschiessen sein wird! Auch wenn ich vorher KEINE chance habe zu laufen, da ich ja in der Pampass stecke, habe ich mich gerade fuer die 10km Strecke des „Glitnir Marathon Reykjavik“ am Samstag morgen angemeldet.
Da ich den Lauf „alleine“ mache, wirds wohl kaum Bilder geben ?! anyway, ich schicke meine Laufsachen an das Guesthouse in Reykjavik, wo ich Freitag und Samstag uebernachte. Hoffe das klappt alles!

hatte ja lange ueberlegt, ein T-Shirt zu tragen „a la „stop the killing, save the whales“, aber da mein Training und Vorbereitung auf den Lauf beschiessen sind, werde ich genug mit mir selber zu kaempfen haben. Naechstes Jahr, dann!

The Flatey-Weekend!





wie ich schon schrieb, war toll auf Flatey, unglaublich schoene insel, keine touristen, 10 haeuser und rundherum das Meer. Selbst die ueberfahrt war grandios mit „Gimli, dem Fischerboot.

wir haben die ehemalige „School“ ausgereaumt, Schutt und Holz, abends dann eine riesen Bonfire drausgemacht und Bier dazu. „Haukur“ legte auch noch an und Arved Fuchs kamm auch noch kurz vorbei. Am naechsten Tag weitergearbeitet, den Kamine „zerlegt“ und nachmittags eine augebiegen Walk ueber die Insel gemacht. Defintiv mit das beste, was ich hier in Island gemacht habe! Takk fyrir, Oddur Örvar!

Es gibt auch eine Seite ueber seinen „superdog“ odin ein englischer Setter, Jaghund, der abgerichtet ist und der Star in Norwegen/Island ist 😉

Komdu (or details for leaving the rock)

i booked me flights out from this rock, means flying down to Reykjavik on the 1st of October, then taking the plane to Copenhagen on the 4th and heading from there back to Dusseldorf the morning of the 7th.

what does this means? First, i have 3 days in Reykjavik, even a last Friday-„Runtur„, next day soaking in at the „Blá Lónið.„, flying for 3 days to Copenhagen, have an nice „nights out“ on Saturday, too. Some arty museums on Sunday and Shopping for new Glasses on Monday. perfect plan, i would say!

BUT, we all hopefully see us at my place in duesseldorf on the evening of the 7th, cause i have birthday on the 8th.

So I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A “ OMG, HE MADE IT BACK HOME, AGAIN“ and „B*DAY“- PARTY in once: serving Brennivín, Hákarl or other dishes of þorramatur, incl. hunderts of boring whale pictures to you!

i need to go there: somehow!


one of the many reasons i am here, is hiking. in the last weeks there was so much going on, that i couldn’t find time and effort to go into the wild 8besides small staff and ásbergi/dettifoss-walk). a shame!

another problem is, that a lot of the well-marked, well-know tracks are in the south, skaftafell, landmannalaugur, þörsmörk, skogar or up northwest, hornstrandir …

anyway, time is running fast and i need to find a way to come at least to landmannalaugar, the „overland-track“ of iceland.

should be an easy 4-5 days walk, if, of course weather is stable. the only problem is, that it cost me around 150 Euro (Transportation) to do it and i need at least 7 days from landmannalaugar to skogar and back up north (via on night in rey).

and its the tourist season in full bloom, means hundreds of german couples in jack wolfskin or salwea jackets on the trail, talking shit … 🙁

at the end of the month, i am again in reyjavik, my guests are coming and in september, we switch back to our 5days work/2 days off schedule at the museum.

how to find those nice geo-thermal bathing pools?

one of the delights of hanging around in iceland. nice free geo-thermal heated bathing pools! everywhere! but there is one important role, esp. for visitors. you must wash yourself before NAKED (if possible) before entering the pools, cause there is no chlorides eg inside.

must be even gorgeous in wintertime. and remember u don’t swim in pools, you let yourself soak in and talk, while having a cold beer!
